of PRINCE OF DICE

by Jack Engelhard

Lamed Vov: Thirty-six Just Men: One Masterpiece of Literature.

In this novel Engelhard seriously and humbly reached to God Himself. It felt to me that this book touched God and He responded. Maybe all readers won’t comprehend that success, but I feel certain each reader will feel it.

The feelings I had while reading this book were precisely what I seek. I looked forward to the next time I could read another segment. I wanted to have more time more often to continue reading and resented anything causing me to retire too late to have an hour or more for reading.  Yet I wanted to slow the reading because I wanted to have more of it left every time a lull allowed reading.

The writing style in this novel was subtly different from Engelhard’s other books which are so artfully composed, a fellow author can’t help but pause to admire the sheen of the syntax. In this book, the characters and story take over so completely there is no perceivable writing style. There is just the story and the characters.

Maybe that’s a feat beyond style, though I relish style, too.

Whatever way Engelhard puts together his novels, they work. They are enthralling enlightening reads exuding literary class with the cleanest writing style, or with the story taking all.

JACK ENGELHARD’S “SLOT ATTENDANT”

By John W. Cassell

My copy of Jack Engelhard’s SLOT ATTENDANT came this afternoon.  As I was reading another truly engrossing novel at the time and NEVER read more than one book at a time, I set myself the modest goal of reading chapter one today, then finishing the other book tomorrow, thereafter reading this long-eagerly anticipated story solely until completion.

You know what happens to the “best laid plans….”  Likely you do in Gaelic as well as English.

What happens is, here it is almost 2AM and I just finished SLOT ATTENDANT.  I could NOT put it down.  I could not stop until I knew as much as the author cared to tell me about every absorbing subplot, as well as learning heaps about both casinos, in which I have a certain rooting interest, and the world of writing and publishing…a world so important to me and many people I deeply care about…. not until I learned the outcome of protagonist Jay Leonard’s desperate battle to regain both confidence in and respect for himself.

Having lost both myself once upon a time, I found myself quickly empathizing with his brilliantly orchestrated struggle.  I FELT for this man…Jack Engelhard is that kind of writer…superlatively combining personal experience, the experience of others, and a truly vivid, thoroughly grounded imagination to paint this compelling portrait.

Recession Bingo

By Jack Engelhard

Turns out – according to The New York Times – that Barack Obama took in nearly a billion dollars for his successful presidential campaign; all that from fellow Americans donating their pennies, nickels and dimes, and all of it during a time when we’re being told that there’s a Recession going on.

I forget what sum what’s his name collected on the Republican side, nothing that can match Obama’s windfall, that’s for sure, but it was plenty.

So what Recession are we talking about? Yes, many of us are hurting, but SOMEBODY is raking it in. Like I always say – everything depends on luck.
